When we consider modern day heroes that aren’t animated, the most obvious example would be troops on the front lines. To compare Beowulf to these heroes, though, would be difficult. Beowulf fought a towering monster, Grendel, while our soldiers, still valiant, merely fight other soldiers. Perhaps less obvious would be political heroes, which actually compare to Beowulf quite well. Beowulf, as a hero to his Scandinavian people, was fighting for their freedom. He vowed to fight Grendel bravely and even defeat him in return for a better life for his people. Political activists such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Abraham Lincoln fought for the same cause—to free their oppressed people. While certainly comparable, these heroes may not be the most modern. So, let us take different kinds of heroes into thought. Action heroes, for instance, are known for performing amazing feats while fighting for justice, usually through the use of superpowers. Likewise, Beowulf used the power and brawn he so bragged about to fight the awful Grendel to gain freedom for his people.
